About This Comic: Thumbnails Roulette

There is a tendency when killing time to peruse the teeny-tiny profile pics of new connections (on Twitter in particular) to click through to verify whether closer inspection bears out how attractive a photo is. To be clear and avoid confusing jargon, “thumbnails” are so-called tiny images used in quick sketching or design. It is so-called because they can –  should be –  be only the size of your thumbnail. A household word, if your household has a designer in it, that is.

It begs the question that this is really a thoroughly shallow pursuit. I know this, its a personal flaw being superficial, I blame TV. More to the point, never once has the activity resulted in a “win”. Thumbnails can lie, and often do.

On other topics we have the use of what became a household word in the eighties and then sank like a stone in the nineties and now exists only in obscure references like this one.  If you don’t know what a sniglet is, hyperlink over here. Go ahead I’ll wait.

If you don’t have time to get thee to Wikipedia, a sniglet is from a bit on TV by Rich Hall about “words that should exist, but don’t”. My favorite, although I can’t remember the actual sniglet is “the number of times you will pass the vacuum over an item before giving up and bending over to pick it up by hand”. I’ll try to find the sniglet and update.

For those of you young guns who tend to mock the eighties for the music, hair, clothes, bad sitcoms all I can say is “you weren’t there”. The early eighties in particular were a great time. And of course if you can think of a sniglet for this pinch-to-zoom thumbnails pointless pursuit, I’m all ears.

Take care, be well and share this comic, please.

P.S. Speaking of TV, I’ve been poking around GetGlue. If you are too let’s get connected over there. Right now, Revolution from J.J. Abrams is must-see TV although I think it’s doomed and doesn’t have legs and I’ll admit it here the “Nashville” may have me on the hook. Clearly there’s a comic in the latter so I can draw Hayden Panattiere who looks great even in thumbnails. She’s from my area and I can’t tell you who many double-takes I’ve done at the mall since girls are copping her look.
